How will this season inform your new-decade beauty habits? From Gucci Beauty’s runway dramatics (courtesy of streaming mascara tears), to reflective jewels (thanks to Isamaya Ffrench’s handiwork at Halpern and Giambattista Valli) and the renaissance of the red lip – here’s your inside take on the nine beauty trends set to light up your feed in 2020.

1. Red-lip renaissance

What you need to know: From ultra-pigmented shades with a turn-of-the-Millennium sheen (à la Oscar de la Renta) to mattified berry hues – the FW20 catwalks were laden with novel takes on the classic scarlet pout. How did makeup artist Tom Pecheux set about creating the new era ODLR look? First he dialled-down the old-Hollywood connotations, amping up the dewiness of the models’ base. Elsewhere at Givenchy, the punchy lip was partnered with the subtlest of smoky eyes, lending an ultra-modern twist to the house’s film noir heroine silhouettes.

2. The cat eye goes pop

What you need to know: Your key throwback ref for the new season? Pop art. Refresh your high-school knowledge of the mid-century movement ASAP – saturated eye-shadow shades and cartoonish liner are scheduled to inject a slice of playfulness come autumn, thanks to Miu Miu (Euphoria’s Storm Reid opened Mrs Prada’s punkish parade). Think flawless winged liner and an abundance of cerulean and moss green shadow on lids.

3. From glitter to gold leaf

What you need to know: The most eye-catching makeup trend to light up the FW20 runways? A freehand approach to glittering face adornment. Take inspiration from Simone Rocha’s foiled fragments (brainchild of makeup artist Thomas de Kluyver) and Marni’s sparkle-strewn hair and faces – when it comes to after-dark beauty, the more playful your look the better.
